Chapter 5

अवैधाचारः नैव करणीयः।

(Corruption should never be done)

कुमार: - तात, अप्यद्य वयं सर्वे राष्ट्रीयपुरस्कारप्राप्तं चित्रपटं प्रेक्षितुं गच्छाम: Æ 
जनक: - जात, किन्तु चित्रपटस्यास्य प्रवेशपत्राणि सद्य: नोपलभ्यन्ते इति श्रुतं मया । अद्य तु रविवासर: । तर्हि किमु वक्तव्यम् Æ 
कुमार: -  जानामि तत्सर्वं, किन्तु अधिकमूल्यं दत्त्वा प्रवेशपत्राणि लभ्यन्ते ।
जनक: - सौम्य, कथं त्वया ज्ञायते Æ
कुमार: - वयस्येन कथितम् । तेनापि तथा क्रीतानि । वयमपि तथैव करिष्याम: ।

Translation:

Child : Father, shall we all go to watch a national award winning movie today?

Father: Son, but (it is) heard by  me that tickets of this movie are not available immediately. (And) today is Sunday, then what to say?

Child: That all I know but tickets are obtained by giving extra money.

Father: O child, how do you know (this)?

Child: (It is) told by (my) friend. He also bought in the same manner. We will also do the same.

कुमार: ¹ तात, अप्यद्य वयं सर्वे राष्ट्रीयपुरस्कारप्राप्तं चित्रपटं प्रेक्षितुं गच्छाम:Æ
जनक: ¹ पुत्र, अपि जानासि त्वं यद् असावनुचित: मार्ग: Æ एष: अवैधाचार: È
कुमार: ¹ श्रुत: मया शब्दोऽयम् È किन्तु तस्य समग्रार्थ: न ज्ञात: È
जनक: ¹ शृणु तर्हि È केवलं स्वार्थसिद्धये अनुष्ठितं विधिविरुद्धमाचरणं नियमातिक्रमणं निषिद्धाचरणं नाम अवैधाचार: È
Translation:

Father: Son, do you know that this (is) improper way? This (is) corruption.

Child: I have heard this word. But its complete meaning is not known (to me).

Father: Then listen. (Any) illegal action, violation of rules, improper act done only for the fulfillment of own benefit is called as corruption.

कुमार: ¹ स्वकार्यस्य सत्वरसिद्ध्यर्थं केचन जना: तेषु तेषु कार्यालयेष्वधिकमूल्यं ददति इति श्रुतं मया È किमेष अवैधाचार: Æ
जनक: ¹ अथ किम् È महानेष अपराध: È यत: तेन विधिभङ्ग: भवति È अवैधाचारै: भ्रष्टजनानां कार्यसिद्धि: भवति किन्तु तेन जनसामान्या: स्वाधिकारवञ्चिता: भवन्ति È कार्यसिद्ध्यर्थं वैधाचार: उचित: È अत: कस्यापि वस्तुन: निश्चितमूल्यं दत्त्वैव क्रयणमुचितम् È

Translation:
Child: I have heard that some people offer extra money at their work places for the quick accomplishment of own task. Is this corruption?

Father: Of course! This (is a) big crime. Because, the law gets violated due to that. By corruption, objective of corrupt people is fulfilled but common people remain deprived of (their) own rights due to that. To fulfill the task, legal practice is proper. So, buying any object by paying its appropriate price is only right.

 
कुमार: ¹ किन्तु भवत्सदॄशानां केषांचिज्जनानामेव मतिरेषा È न्याय्यपथानुसारिण: सत्यमार्गगामिन: तु कार्यसिद्धि: नित्यमेव कष्टसाध्या भवति È अङ्गुलिमात्रगणनीयानां धीराणां न्याय्यमार्गानुसारणेन किम् Æ
जनक: ¹ जात, पश्य एकोऽपि चन्द्रमा: तमो हन्ति विश्वं धवलयति च È एवमेव एकोऽपि सत्यगामी मनुज: समस्तं जनसमूहं प्रेरयति È न्याय्यपथगामिन: विरला: जना: समाजं परिवर्तयितुं समर्था: È यथा दीपेनैकेन  दीपमाला प्रज्ज्वाल्यते तथा एकस्य वैधाचारेण अन्ये जना: वैधाचारिण: भवेयु: È
कुमार: ¹ ज्ञातं मया, तात È अद्यप्रभृति वैधमार्गमेवानुसरामि È

 

Translation:

Child: But, this thinking is of only some people like you.  Fulfillment of objectives for those who follow the path of justice and truth is attained with difficulty. What is the use of following the path of justice by (those) courageous ones who are very few in number (countable on fingers)?

Father: O Son, see. Even a single moon destroys the darkness and brightens the world. In the same way, even one truthful person inspires the whole crowd of people. (These) few people following the path of justice (are) capable to change the society. Just as the series of lamps is enlightened by one lamp, similarly, by legal act of one (person), other people will also become law abiding (citizens).

Child: Father, (it is) understood by me. From today, I will follow the legal path only.

1) अप्यद्य = अपि + अद्य ।                                 
2) चित्रपटस्यास्य =  चित्रपटस्य + अस्य ।                         
3) नोपलभ्यन्ते = न + उपलभ्यन्ते ।  
4) तेनापि = तेन + अपि ।                
5) वयमपि = वयम् + अपि ।                                 
6) तथैव = तथा + एव ।
7) असावनुचित: = असौ + अनुचित: ।
8) शब्दोऽयम् = शब्द: + अयम् ।             
9) कार्यालयेष्वधिकमूल्यं = कार्यालयेषु + अधिकमूल्यम् ।                
10) किमेष: =  किम् + एष: ।
11) महानेष: = महान् + एष: ।    
12) दत्त्वैव =  दत्त्वा + एव ।
13) क्रयणमुचितम् = क्रयणम् + उचितम् ।             
14) केषांचिज्जनानामेव = केषांचित् + जनानाम् + एव ।
15) मतिरेषा =  मति: + एषा ।
16)नित्यमेव = नित्यम् + एव ।
17) एकोऽपि =  एक: + अपि ।
18) तमो हन्ति = तम: + हन्ति । 
19) दीपेनैकेन = दीपेन + एकेन ।            
20) वैधमार्गमेवानुसरामि = वैधमार्गम् + एव + अनुसरामि ।

Meanings:

प्रेक्षितुम्Ä to watch,  

प्रवेशपत्राणि Ä tickets,  

सद्य: Ä immediately,  

वयस्येन Ä by friend,  

तर्हि Ä then,  

अनुष्ठितं Ä done,  

नियमातिक्रमणं Ä violation of rules, 

निषिद्धाचरणं Ä improper act, 

विधिभङ्ग:  Ä violation of law,  

स्वाधिकारवञ्चिता: Ä deprived of own rights,  

धवलयति  Ä brightens,   

अद्यप्रभृति Ä from today.
