Poem Six

पैरिसनगरवर्णनम् ǀ

Description of city Paris.

पारीनगर्या: खलु कण्ठभागे मालेव सीनाख्यनदी सुलग्ना ||

महासुखं यत्र जना लभन्ते नौकाविहारस्य तटभ्रमैश्च || 1 ||

Sandhi Dissolution:

1) मालेव = माला + इव |

2) जना लभन्ते = जना: + लभन्ते |

3) तटभ्रमैश्च = तटभ्रमै: + च |

Meanings:

 सुलग्ना = attached,

तटभ्रमै: = strolling on the banks,

महासुखम् = great joy,

नौकाविहारस्य = of boating.

Translation: The River named Seine is indeed nicely attached to the city of Paris like a garland around the neck, where people acquire great joy of boating and strolling on the banks.

ततस्तटे सीनसरित्समीपे गॉथीक-स्थापत्यकलात्मरूपम् |

न्यायस्य प्रासाद इति प्रसिद्धमैतिह्यमुक्तं भवनञ्च दृष्टम् || 2 ||

Sandhi Dissolution

1) ततस्तटे = तत: + तटे |

2) प्रासाद इति = प्रासाद: + इति |

3) प्रसिद्धमैतिह्यमुक्तं = प्रसिद्धम् + ऐतिह्यम् + उक्तम् |

4) भवनञ्च = भवनम् + च |

Meanings

तत: = then,

ऐतिह्यम् = historical

स्थापत्यकलात्मरूपम् = designed with architecture,

Translation: Then, near the bank of the river Seine, a historical monument designed with Gothic architecture which is well known as the Palace of Justice ( Palais de justice ) is seen.

समीपमाराधनमन्दिरं च सेन्ट-चेपलं विश्रुतमस्ति नाम |

मूर्ध्नोऽस्य तीक्ष्णस्तनुग्रभागो नभस्थितं दर्शयतीव देवम् || 3 ||

Sandhi Dissolution:

1) समीपमाराधनमन्दिरं = समीपम् + आराधनमन्दिरम् |

2) विश्रुतमस्ति = विश्रुतम् + अस्ति |

3) मूर्ध्नोऽस्य = मूर्ध्न: + अस्य |

4) तीक्ष्णस्तनुरग्रभागो= तीक्ष्ण: + तनु: + अग्रभागो | (अग्रभाग:)

5) दर्शयतीव = दर्शयति + इव |

Meanings:

आराधनमन्दिरम् = church

विश्रुतम् = famous, well-known,

मूर्ध्न: = top

तीक्ष्ण: = sharp,

तनु: अग्रभाग: = slender steeple,

Translation: Nearby, there is the famous church named as 'Saint

Chapelle.' Its sharp, slender steeple (pointed peak) on top, as if, shows God staying in the sky.

विख्यातनाम्नी खलु जोनदेवी सुमार्गमध्येऽस्ति तदीयमूर्ति: |

अश्वाधिरूढा स्वकरे गृहीत्वा ध्वजं समुत्तोल्य विराजते सा || 4 ||

Sandhi Dissolution:

1) सुमार्गमध्येऽस्ति = सुमार्गमध्ये + अस्ति |

Meanings:

विख्यातनाम्नी = famous

अश्वाधिरूढा =riding on a horse,

समुत्तोल्य = balancing.

Translation: The name Lady (Saint) Joan is indeed famous (in Paris). Her statue is situated in the middle of the highway. She looks beautiful riding on a horse balancing the flag taken in the hand.

यस्यामनेकै: खलु सेतुबन्धै: विराजते सीनसरित्सुबद्धा |

नदीं पुरी सापि नदी पुरीञ्च परस्परं भूषयतोऽत्र मन्ये || 5 ||

Sandhi Dissolution:

1) यस्यामनेकै: = यस्याम् + अनेकै: |

2) सापि = सा + अपि |

3) पुरीञ्च = पुरीम् + च |

4) भूषयतोऽत्र = भूषयत: + अत्र |

Meanings:

सेतुबन्धै: = by bridges,

सुबद्धा = well-built,

मन्ये = I think.

Translation: The river Seine indeed looks beautiful due to

innumerable well-built bridges on it . I believe that here the (Paris)

city adorns the river and that river in turn adorns the city.
