Chapter 2

For the Welfare and Happiness of Consumers

Translation

(मधुरा माता च आपणं गच्छत:ǀ)

(Madhura and mother go to the market)

माता           -  अयि भो:, कियद् मूल्यं कर्कटिकानाम्?

Mother                 :   Oh, what is the price of cucumbers?

प्रथम: शाकविक्रेता - अशीतिरूप्यकाणि किलोपरिमितस्य कृते ǀ

First Vendor        :   Rs.80 per kilo.

माता           -   महार्घा: शाका: तवापणे ǀ

Mother                 :  Vegetables are very costly in your shop.

प्रथम: शाकविक्रेता -  अयमधुना ग्रीष्मकाल: इति तु भवती जानाति एव ǀ अस्तु              पञ्चसप्ततिरूप्यकै: ददामि ǀ

First Vendor        :  You know that now it is summer. Let it be. I will give for Rs. 75.

माता           -  ददातु ǀ

Mother                 :   Give.

मधुरा          - अम्ब, नैष सम्यक् तोलयति ǀ तोलनार्थं सम्यक् परिमाणमपि न          योजयति ǀ परिमाणस्थाने पाषाणखण्डं योजयति ǀ

Madhura            :   Oh mother, he is not weighing properly. He is not even using

the proper measure for weighing. In place of weight, he is using a piece of stone.

माता          - मधुरे, सत्यं वदसि ǀ नावलोकितं मया ǀ किं रे, तव समीपे ISI            चिह्नाङ्कितानि परिमाणानि न सन्ति?  परिमाणानां स्थाने             पाषाणखण्डानामुपयोजनं न विधियुक्तम् ǀ तुलाया: दण्डोऽपि त्रुटित: ǀ  अत: वस्तूनां तोलनमपि सम्यग् न भवति ǀ जानासि किम्?  यदि     ग्राहकमञ्चमभिगच्छामि तर्हि शाकविक्रर्यअनुज्ञापत्रादपि त्वं वञ्चितो      भवसि ǀ

Mother                : Oh Madhura, you are speaking the truth. It was not seen by me.

Oh, don't you have ISI marked weights? It is not legal to use stones in place of weights. The arm of the balance is also broken. Therefore, weighing of the goods is not done properly. Do you know, if I approach the Grahaka Mancha (consumer forum), you will loose your license for selling vegetables?

माता         -    ग्राहकहिताय ग्राहकसुखाय च चतु:सप्तनवैकतमे (1974) संवत्सरे       स्थापिता एषा संस्था 'ग्राहकपञ्चायत', 'ग्राहकमञ्च:' इति नाम्ना         ज्ञायते ǀ ग्राहकाणां ग्राहकै: ग्राहकार्थं निर्मित: एष मञ्च:               ग्राहकहितायैव बद्धपरिकरो वर्तते ǀ

Mother             :    This organization was established in the year 1974 for the

                           welfare and happiness of consumers. It is known by the name                                      'Grahaka Panchayata' or 'Grahaka Mancha.' This forum, committed                              only for the (welfare of) consumers is created by the consumers, for                              the consumers, of the consumers.

द्वितीय: शाकविक्रेता -  यदि ग्राहक: विक्रेयवस्तुविषये संतुष्ट: न भवति तर्हि           ग्राहकन्यायालयं गन्तुं तस्य अधिकारो भवति ǀ अत: मम             परिमाणानि गृहीत्वा शाकं सम्यक् तोलय ǀ

Second Vendor     :  If the consumer is not satisfied with goods he has purchased, he has the right to approach the consumer court. Hence, weigh the   vegetables properly taking the appropriate weights (provided) by me.

माता          -  युक्तमुक्तं भवता ǀ

Mother               : Correctly said by you.

प्रथम: शाकविक्रेता -  (तोलयित्वा ददाति) गृह्णातु भवती ǀ क्षम्यताम् ǀ

First Vendor         : (gives after weighing) you (please) take (this). Forgive (me).

माता          -     कथं प्लास्टिकस्यूतं ददासि ǀ वस्त्रस्यूत: मत्समीपे वर्तते ǀ

Mother:                    Why are you giving plastic bags? I have a cloth bag.

मधुरा          -    पर्यावरणरक्षणार्थं प्लास्टिकस्यूतानामुपयोग: न करणीय: ǀ                   विधिनापि तेषामुपयोजनं निषिद्धमस्ति ǀ

Madhura             :    For conservation of environment plastic bags should not be

                                  used. Use of those (bags) is also prohibited by law.

माता          -     समीचिनं, जाते, एवं सदैव अवहितचित्ता भव ǀ

Mother:                    Very good. O child, always be vigilant like this.

प्रथम: शाकविक्रेता -    धन्यवादा: ǀ भवती मां ज्ञापितवती ग्राहकाधिकारविषये ǀ                     अद्यप्रभृति ISI चिह्नाङ्कितान्येव परिमाणानि योजयामि ǀ 
              नमो नम: ǀ

First Vendor        :   Thank you. You have enlightened me about the rights of the                                       consumers. From today, I will use ISI marked measures only.                                       Namaskar.
