Chapter Four

सत्कर्म एव पुण्यम् ǀ

Satkarm Eva Punyam

(Only Good deed is a merit)

कश्चन गोन्दियानिवासी यात्री एकदा काशीनगरं जगाम ǀ काशी मोक्षदायिनी नगरी इत्यनेन श्रुतमासीत् ǀ काशीं प्राप्य गङ्गातीरे अटन् स चिन्तितवान् यत् कोऽपि नर: अस्मिन् गङ्गाजले निमज्यात्मानं पापमुक्तमिति भावयति ǀ गङ्गाजले निमग्ने सति सत्यं स पापमुक्तो भवति वा न वा ? जनानां पापक्षालनेन एतावत् कालपर्यन्तं नदीजले कियत् पापं सङ्कलितं स्यादिति ǀ

A certain traveler dwelling in Gondiya once went to the city of Kashi. It was heard by this one that Kashi is the city which gives salvation. Having reached to Kashi, while wondering on the bank of Ganga, he thought that having taken a dip in this water of Ganga, any person considers himself to be free from sins. Having taken a dip in the water of Ganga, does he really become free from sins or not? How much sin must be accumulated in the water of river by washing off sins of people till date?

          अन्येद्यु: साशङ्कमना: स गङ्गातीरं गत्वा गङ्गानदीं पृष्टवान्, “हे गङ्गादेवि, अहर्निशं जनानां पापक्षालनं करोषि ǀ तेन भवत्या: जलं निश्चितं पापमयं वर्तते ǀ तर्हि भवती अस्य पापमयजलस्य किं करोतीति ?” तन्निशम्य गङ्गा उक्तवती, " रे यात्रिन्, यदाऽहं सागरं मिलामि तदा सर्वमेतत्पापमयं जलं तस्मिन्नेव उत्सॄजामि ǀ अनन्तरं तस्य किं भवतीति न जानेऽहमिति ǀ” तदा तद् ज्ञातुमुत्सुकोऽसौ यात्री सागरतीरं गतवान् तत्र च सागरं पृष्टवान्, " रे सागर, सर्वा: नद्य: स्वजलस्थितं पापं त्वयि निक्षिपन्ति ǀ तेन त्वं पापाकर: वा पापधिरेव भवसि न वेति ǀ”  सागर: उक्तवान् , “ न हि, यदा नद्य: पापमानयन्ति तदहं गॄह्णामीति सत्यम् ǀ किन्तु सूर्यकिरणै: तस्य जलस्य बाष्पं भवति ǀ बाष्पीभूतस्य पापजलस्य तदनन्तरं किं भवतीति न जाने इति ǀ”

Next day with doubtful mind, having gone to the bank of Ganga, he asked the river Ganga, “ O goddess Ganga, you wash off the sins of people day and night. Surely your water has become full of sins because of that. Then what do you do with this sinful water? Having heard that Ganga said, “O traveler, when I meet the ocean, I release all this sinful water there itself (into the ocean). I don't know what happens to it after that.” Then this traveler who was curious to know that, went to the sea shore and asked the ocean there, “ O ocean, all the rivers release all sins, present in their water in you. Don't you become the mine of sins or accumulator of sins by that?” Ocean said, “ Not at all. It is true that when the rivers bring the sins, I take it. But that water gets vaporized by sun rays. I don't know what happens to that vaporized sinful water.”

          तच्छ्रुत्वा अतीवोत्कण्ठित: स सागरतीरे स्थित्वैव अवलोकयितुमारब्धवान् ǀ तेन दॄष्टं तस्य बाष्पस्यैव मेघो भवति ǀ अत: स यात्री मेघं पृष्टवान्, "रे मेघ, अस्य पापस्य किं करोषीति?" मेघ: भणितवान्, " न किमपि करोमि ǀ अहं तु जीवनदाता ǀ जीवनं स्वकर्माधिष्ठितम् ǀ अत: यस्य यत्पापमस्ति तत्तस्य गृहशिखरे वृष्टिरूपेण पातयामीति ǀ”

Having heard that, he who was very anxious, started observing by being there on the seashore itself. He saw that a cloud is formed by that vapor itself. So that traveler asked the cloud, “ O cloud, what do you do with this sin?” Cloud said, “ I don't do anything. I am indeed the giver of life and life is based on one's own deeds. So, I shower that (individual’s) sin in the form of rain on the roof of his (own) house.”

          एतन्निशम्य यात्री मनस्यकरोत् यद् उचितप्रायश्चित्तं विना पापान्मुक्तिरशक्या ǀ अत: सत्कर्मानुसरणमेव सर्वथा श्रेयस्करमिति ज्ञातमधुना मया ǀ जीवने सदाचारी भूत्वैव पुण्यसञ्चयं करिष्ये ǀ पापाचरणं कृत्वा तस्य भारं न कस्मा अपि दास्ये इति विचिन्त्य प्रशान्तमनसा स स्वगॄहमगच्छत् ǀ

Having heard this, traveler thought it is impossible to be free from sins without proper repentance. So, I have understood that following good deeds only would be beneficial by all means. I will treasure the merits by being well behaved in life. By performing sinful acts, I won't give its burden to anyone else, having thought (of this) he went home with peaceful mind.

8) तन्निशम्य = तत् + निशम्य ǀ 

9) यदाऽहं = यदा + अहम् ǀ           

10) सर्वमेतत्पापमयं =  सर्वम् + एतत् + पापमयम् ǀ

11) तस्मिन्नेव = तस्मिन् + एव ǀ            

12) जानेऽहमिति = जाने + अहम् + इति ǀ

13) ज्ञातुमुत्सुकोऽसौ= ज्ञातुम् + उत्सुक: + असौ ǀ     

14) पापधिरेव = पापधि: + एव ǀ

15) वेति =  वा + इति ǀ                                           

16)सागर उक्तवान् = सागर: + उक्तवान् ǀ

17) पापमानयन्ति =  पापम् + आनयन्ति ǀ                    

18) गृह्णामीति = गृह्णामि + इति ǀ                   

19) भवतीति = भवति + इति ǀ                             

20) तच्छ्रुत्वा = तत् + श्रुत्वा ǀ                    

21) अतीवोत्कण्ठित: = अतीव + उत्कण्ठित: ǀ

23) अवलोकयितुमारब्धवान् = अवलोकयितुम् + आरब्धवान् ǀ

24) बाष्पस्यैव = बाष्पस्य + एव ǀ

30) पापान्मुक्तिरशक्या = पापात् + मुक्ति: + अशक्या ǀ    

31) सत्कर्मानुसरणमेव = सत्कर्मानुसरणम् + एव ǀ                  

32) श्रेयस्करमिति = श्रेयस्करम् + इति ǀ

33) ज्ञातमधुना = ज्ञातम् + अधुना ǀ                                

34) भूत्वैव = भूत्वा + एव ǀ             

35) कस्मा अपि = कस्मै + अपि ǀ                         

36) स्वगृहमगच्छत् = स्वगृहम् + अगच्छत् ǀ    

           

Meanings

प्राप्य = Having reached, 

अटन् = while wondering

निमज्य= having taken a dip

भावयति = considers,       

अन्येद्यु: = next day, 

अहर्निशम्  = day and night,

उत्सृजामि  = I release,

पापाकर: = mine of sins

पापधि:  = accumulator of sins

उत्कण्ठित: = anxious,      

स्वकर्माधिष्ठितम् = based on one’s own deeds,      
 श्रेयस्करम् = beneficial, 

पुण्यसञ्चयं करिष्ये = I will treasure the merits.
