Poem Five
सुभाषितमाला 2 ǀ
A Garland of Good Sayings 2.

पात्रापात्रविवेको हि धेनुपन्नगयोरिव ǀ
तृणात्सञ्जायते क्षीरं क्षीरात्सञ्जायते विषम् ǀǀ 1 ǀǀ

Sandhi Dissolution:
1) धेनुपन्नगयोरिव = धेनुपन्नगयो: + इव ǀ
2) तृणात्सञ्जायते = तृणात् + सञ्जायते ǀ
3) क्षीरात्सञ्जायते = क्षीरात् + सञ्जायते ǀ
Meanings:
पात्रापात्रविवेक:= judgment between worthy and unworthy,
पन्नग: = snake, क्षीरम् = milk,
Translation:
Judgment between the worthy and unworthy is indeed like a cow and a snake. (As) Milk is produced from the grass (and) poison is created from the milk.

अद्रोह: सर्वभूतेषु कर्मणा मनसा गिरा ǀ
अनुग्रहश्च दानं शीलमेतत्प्रश्यस्यते ǀǀ 2 ǀǀ
Sandhi Dissolution:
1) अनुग्रहश्च = अनुग्रह: + ǀ
2) शीलमेतत्प्रश्यस्यते = शीलम् + एतत् + प्रशस्यते ǀ
Meanings:
अद्रोह:= Good behavior,                  गिरा = by speech,
अनुग्रह:= favor,                                प्रशस्यते = is praised.
Translation:
Good behavior, (doing) favor and (showing) generosity to all creatures by action, mind and speech, this character is (always) praised.

यत्रोत्साहसमारम्भो यत्रालस्यविहीनता ǀ
नयविक्रमसंयोगस्तत्र श्रीरचला ध्रुवम् ǀǀ 3 ǀǀ
Sandhi Dissolution:
यत्रोत्साहसमारम्भो = यत्र + उत्साहसमारम्भ :
यत्रालस्यविहीनता = यत्र + आलस्यविहीनता ǀ
नयविक्रमसंयोगस्तत्र = नयविक्रमसंयोग + :तत्र ǀ
श्रीरचला = श्री + :अचला ǀ
Meanings
उत्साहसमारम्भ : = beginning of efforts, नयविक्रमसंयोग := a union of ethics and courage, श्री: = prosperity, अचला = stable.
Translation:
Where (there is enthusiastic) beginning of efforts, where (there is) no laziness and where (there is) a union of ethics and courage, there prosperity indeed becomes stable.

गुणी गुणं वेत्ति वेत्ति निर्गुण:
बली बलं वेत्ति वेत्ति निर्बल:ǀ
पिको वसन्तस्य गुणं वायस:
गजश्च सिंहस्य बलं मूषक: ǀǀ 4 ǀǀ
Sandhi Dissolution:
1) पिको वसन्तस्य = पिक + :वसन्तस्य ǀ
2) गजश्च = गज   : ǀ
Meanings:
वेत्ति = recognizes
वायस:= crow.
Translation:
The virtuous recognizes virtue; (but) not the non-virtuous. The strong recognizes strength; (but) not the weak. A cuckoo (knows) the importance of the spring season; not a crow and an elephant (knows) the strength of a lion; not a mouse.
