Chapter Three

World famous sport of Maharashtra.

प्राचीनकालतो विविधा: क्रीडा: प्रचलिता:ǀ काश्चित् साङ्घिका: काश्चिच्च वैयक्तिका: ǀ साङ्घिकक्रीडासु कबड्डी इति भारतीया क्रीडा महाराष्ट्रराज्ये विशेषरूपेण लोकप्रियतां गता ǀ 'हुतुतू' इति तस्या अपरनाम ǀ तुकाराममहाराजस्य अभङ्गवचनेषु एषा क्रीडा 'हमामा, हुंबरी, हुतुतू' इत्यादिभि: नामभि: निर्दिष्टा ǀ बङ्गदेशे 'हुडू, दक्षिणभारते 'चेडुगुडु', उत्तरभारते 'कबड्डी' इति नाम्ना विख्यातैषा क्रीडाǀ

Different sports are prevailing since ancient times. Some are team (games) and some are individual (sports). Among the team games, the Indian game Kabaddi has become popular especially in the state of Maharashtra. It's another name is 'Hututu'. This game is mentioned by the name Hamama, Humbari, Hututu etc. in the devotional compositions of Saint Tukaram. This game is famous by the name Hudoo in Bengal, Chedu-gudu in Southern India and Kabaddi in Northen India.

अस्यां क्रीडायां प्रतिसङ्घं द्वादश क्रीडापटव: भवन्ति ǀ क्रीडाङ्गणे तु सप्त क्रीडापटव एव खेलन्ति ǀ पञ्च क्रीडापटवो बहिस्तिष्ठन्ति ǀ एष क्रीडाप्रकारो न केवलं पुरुषाणाम्, अपि तु महिलानां कृतेऽपि प्रचलितोऽस्ति ǀ

In this game, there are twelve players in each team. But, only seven players play in the field. Five players remain outside. This type of game is practiced not only by men, but also by women.

अनया कबड्डी-क्रीडया शरीरचापल्यम् उत्साह: आक्रमकत्वं स्वसंरक्षणवृत्ति: शरीरसौष्ठवं च लभ्यन्ते ǀ साहसं निरीक्षणशक्ति: योजकत्वं निर्णयक्षमता साङ्घिकी भावना एकात्मता देशाभिमानश्चैतै: नैकैर्गुणै: क्रीडकस्य व्यक्तित्वं विकसति ǀ एतस्यै क्रीडायै कस्यापि क्रीडासाधनस्यावश्यकता नास्तीति महत्त्वपूर्णं वैशिष्ट्यमिति ǀ

Swiftness of the body, enthusiasm, aggressiveness, tendency of self defense and good physique are obtained due to this game Kabaddi. The personality of the player is developed by various qualities like courage, ability to observe, Managerial skills, strength of decision making, team spirit, integrity and patriotism. Its important feature is no equipment is needed for this type of sport.

स्वातन्त्र्यपूर्वकालादेव क्रीडामेतां वैश्विकस्तरं नेतुं प्रथमप्रयास: कृत: महाराष्ट्रेणैव ǀ शून्यपञ्चनवैकतमे (1950) ख्रिस्ताब्दे अखिल-भारतीय-कबड्डी-सङ्घटनाया: स्थापना समजायत ǀ भारतीय-ऑलिम्पिक-क्रीडासमित्यां अष्टपञ्चनवैकतमे (1958) ख्रिस्तवर्षे एष: क्रीडाप्रकार: ऑलिम्पिक-वैश्विक-क्रीडास्पर्धासु निवेशित: ǀ शून्यनवनवैकतमे (1990)संवत्सरे बीजिङ्गनगरे आयोजितायाम् ऑलिम्पिकस्पर्धायां चीनदेशेनापि एषा क्रीडा स्वीकृता ǀ तदनन्तरं कबड्डीक्रीडाया: सुवर्णयुगमेवावतरितम् ǀ

Since pre-independence time itself, the first (initiative) efforts were done to take this game to the international level by Maharashtra only. All India Kabaddi Association was established in 1950. This game was included in worldwide Olympic sports in 1958 in Indian Olympic sports federation. In the year 1990, China accepted this game in Olympic sports organized at Beijing. Thereafter, started the golden age of Kabaddi.

बीजिङ्गनगरे समायोजितायाम् ऑलिम्पिकस्पर्धायां भारतदेशेन सुवर्णपदकं विजितम्, कबड्डीक्रीडायामेव ǀ अनेन सुवर्णपदकेन आशियाई-स्पर्धाया: कबड्डीक्रीडायां सातत्येन त्रिवारं सुवर्णपदकं प्राप्य विश्वविक्रम: प्रस्थापितो भारतदेशेन ǀ

In Olympic games held at Beijing, the gold medal was won by India in the game of Kabaddi itself. With this gold medal, India created a world record in Asian games by securing the gold medal in the game of Kabaddi for consecutive three times (years).

           अधुना भारतदेशे तथैव जपानपाकिस्तानादिषु आशियादेशेषु एषा क्रीडा क्रीड्यते, एवमेषा लोकप्रियापि सञ्जाता ǀ

 Now, this game is played in India as well as in Asian countries like Japan, Pakistan etc. In this way, this (game) has become popular also.
