Chapter 6
अर्जुनस्य गर्वहरणम् ।
(Destruction
the pride of Arjuna)
एकदा श्रेष्ठो धनुर्धारी अर्जुन: विहारार्थं निबिडारण्यं जगाम । जनसमाकुलान्नगराद् दूरं गत्वा स: मन:शान्तिमनुभवितुमैच्छत् । वने विहरन् चण्डातपेन तप्त: स: वीजनार्थं वॄक्षशाखां छेत्तुं प्रारेभे । तदैव कोऽपि सूर्यखग: तत्रागत्य तस्य हस्ते उपविश्य तं प्रार्थयामास – “हे धनुर्धर, न छेत्तव्या शाखासौ यत: शाखायामस्यां निबद्धे नीडे मम शावका: सुप्ता: ।
Once, the great archer Arjuna went to the dense forest for wandering. He
having gone far from the crowd of people wanted to experience peace of mind. He
who was tormented by the scorching heat (of the sun) while wandering in the
forest, started cutting one branch of the tree to fan (himself). At that time,
one sun bird, having come there and seated on his hand, requested him, “ O
archer, do not cut this branch as my two young ones are slept in the nest built
on that branch.
I have built this nest with great difficulty. I deserve to be obliged
by you.” Having heard his speech, Arjuna whose heart oozed out with compassion,
said to him, “Don’t worry. I won’t trouble you or your young ones. After that,
Arjuna went to cut the another branch of a tree. Few ants fell down from the
branch of the tree. They also requested Arjuna, “O lord, our abodes are built here on these
branches with leaves and are of the form of ball. Our young ones, our queen,
our servants all are resorted to that. What more can I say? We all will be
without a support by cutting this branch. Please, favor us. We will surely help
you in your difficult times.”
पिपीलिकानामभ्यर्थनामाकण्र्य अर्जुनस्तस्मात् स्थानात् प्रातिष्ठताचिन्तयच्च, “क्षुद्रा: जन्तव: एते सूर्यखगा: पिपीलिका: । कथं मम साहाय्यकारिण: भविष्यन्ति । अहं तु शक्तिमान्, शस्त्रधारी, निपुणयोद्धा च ।”
Having heard the request
of ants Arjuna left from that place and thought, these sun birds and ants are
puny creatures. How would they help me? I am indeed a very powerful, bearer of weapons
and the great warrior.
दीर्घसमयोऽतीत: । अज्ञातवासकाले शस्त्रहीन: परिव्राजकवेषधारी अर्जुन: पुनरेकवारं तमेव वनप्रदेशं प्राविशत् । निबिडारण्ये पर्यटति तस्मिन् कुतश्चित् मनुजशब्द इव श्रुतिपथमागत: । कांश्चन गुप्तचरान् तं प्रति एवागच्छत: स दॄष्टवान् । स व्यचिन्तयत् , “ अज्ञातवासकाले यदि कोऽपि मामभिजानीयात् तर्हि महापत्ति: उद्भवेत् । किं करणीयमधुना?” इति चिन्तयत: तस्य पुरत: सूर्यखग: तत्रोपस्थित: ।
Long time passed. In the
incognito period, Arjuna in the disguise of ascetic and having no weapons with
him, entered the same forest. While wandering in the dense forest, he overheard
human utterance. He saw that few spies were coming towards him only. He
thought, “If some one recognizes me in incognito period, then it would be a big
trouble. What to do now?” While thinking so sun bird appeared in front of him.
एवं सङ्कटमुक्तोऽर्जुन: सूर्यखगस्य पिपीलिकानां च वचनं स्मारं स्मारं तान् प्रति कृतज्ञतां प्रकटितवान् ।
Having guided the way in his own voice, he brought Arjuna near certain huge
tree. There was a big hollow in that tree. Having entered that hollow, Arjuna
remained there hidden. Hs whole body was covered by all the ants present in
that hollow in such a way that he appeared to be disappeared. Spies those had
come there, were unable to recognize him and went from that place.
In this way, Arjuna who was free from the calamity, having recalled the
words of sun bird and ants, expressed his gratitude towards them.

19) प्रातिष्ठताचिन्तयच्च = प्रातिष्ठत + अचिन्तयत् + च ।
20) दीर्घसमयोऽतीत: = दीर्घसमय: + अतीत: ।

23) मनुजशब्द इव = मनुजशब्द: + इव ।
